Central Illinois Responds to Extreme Makeover: Home Edition and the Grys Family with Overwhelming Volunteer Support
PEORIA IL – October 25, 2008 – The Extreme Makeover: Home Edition home for the Grys family is well underway in Pekin, IL. What was an empty lot just a few days ago, is now beginning to look a lot more
like a home, as the final touches are made to the exterior of the house. None of this would have been possible with out hundreds of volunteers. Through good and bad weather, daylight and moonlight, we
had skilled trades volunteers working side by side to finish this wonderful gift for the Grys family under a very extreme schedule — and often extreme conditions.
So overwhelming was the community’s response that many people are still contacting the build team to ask us if they are on the volunteer list. At this time we have all of the volunteers that we need for all shifts. A MESSAGE FROM THE BUILDER
Builder Melanie Spurgeon wants to thank everyone who volunteered. She said, “If you volunteered and your name is NOT on the list, please know that we value your offer of help, but cannot give everyone a
slot. We had about 500 volunteer slots to fill; over 4000 people volunteered. That means for every volunteer there are three disappointed people.” She continued, “Because of the extreme conditions under which we are building this home, we are not able to call and let everyone know personally that they weren’t selected. We would love to do that, but it just isn’t possible under these circumstances.”
“Instead, we ask the community to please come down to the build site and support us! Or help us raise money to pay off the Grys family mortgage. Even though this is a very energy efficient house, we know
the taxes and utilities may be higher, so if we can pay off the mortgage, that will go a long way toward offsetting any increased costs.”
FYI
If you are a scheduled volunteer but not a skilled trades person, you need to understand that, as a volunteer, you will not be actually building the house. Skilled contractors volunteered their time to do
the build so that we are sure that everything is very safe. Volunteers on the project are there to make sure that the skilled workers can keep going! Please see the volunteer page on
